My contention is not that this is extremely high brow, only that there is a gag and it might make you chuckle if you are not primed politically to disagree with it.

I’m going to guess that he was either on the “cultural appropriation isn’t a real thing” track or the “ cultural appropriation is real but I don’t give a fuck about it” path.

Yes, crowder is a right wing comedian and commentator (?) I do not watch his show, however it is safe to assume he does not accept the notion of cultural appropriation as it is formulated by progressives.

Right. And that’s key because shock humor absolutely can be funny but it needs at least one of two things: an unexpected twist, or an unexpected source.

Or absurd humor hinging on offensiveness, if you don’t want the word “shock” here.

This is the problem. You find it offensive. His audience does not. So the gag cannot be based upon causing offense.

At the risk of backtracking here, a “joke” can definitely find its ground in being offensive even if the audience aren’t the ones who are offended...so long as the audience are the type that can take pleasure in the anticipation of others being offended.

that may indeed be part of the humour, his cavalier attitude towards what others may think of this performance. That is evident when you take into view the whole of the corpus, as I have done in this in depth analysis.

Aren’t we moving into an even more sophomoric territory of joke construction on those lines though, that of the class clown? Saying anything that will score a reaction, whether positive or negative, hilarity or disgust?

He is probably clowning around, but again if you watch the program its really just a short intro before the show, something for some visual zest.
