Wasn’t that originally the insignia for the Enterprise and each starship has its own insignia? It has since been retconned to be the Starfleet insignia.

In tos this logo was specific to the enterprise.... why after tmp did starfleet change has never been documented to my knowledge
This isn’t true; but it is a commonly held belief. Although ships such as the Constellation and Exeter were shown to have their own badges, it was in fact a wardrobe malfunction. The Starfleet insignia was always supposed to be what the Enterprise crew wore.
