Goodbye Oil & coal! ”Previously in the salt could be removed but would require a costly and energy intensive desalination process. To avoid a desalination step, the team set out to develop electrodes capable of withstanding the harsh conditions required to electrolyze seawater.”

The oil companies are backing hydrogen - for good reason. Most hydrogen is produced from methane and it requires large scale expensive infrastructure, which is what the oil companies specialise in.

Finding a cheap and green method to produce H2 could help widespread adoption of fuel cell technology.

My view is it will always be niche - it's too inefficient and will never be as green as using electricity directly unless that energy would otherwise go to waste.

It still requires more energy than if we just used solar/wind straight to batteries. Battery technology is getting more sustainable/cheaper. Hydrogen requires expensive and non-sustainable ecosystems and, overall, is very inefficient. Gas and Oil companies are pushing for H2.

There was nothing oblivious in the article re efficiency. How does it compare to battery storage (which currently is far superior if I understand correctly)
