"Fear, anxiety, and catastrophizing can amplify pain," says @StanfordMed's @DrSeanMackey. "Start by accepting that you have pain. Then say to yourself, It will get better."https://stanford.io/2sjZ4f3

Many have accepted their pain and said it has to get better but it releases body tension causing less pain but not by huge amounts so nope that is not the answer give patients body dampening pain dampening medications what is so hard to understand pain meds=no pain

How totally ridiculous. You think those of us who have been in unrelenting pain for years haven't accepted it. Will positive thinking fix my herniated discs? My arthritis, my osteoporosis pain. Not at all.

Haha I laughed at that too! Hmmm I think I will just imagine rainbows today - really? Its hard to eat much less think positive about anything.

Those of us w/CHRONIC illnesses already ACCEPT our pain but we don’t want to accept that y’all want to deny us opioids that are safe/effective. How much $ in grants are you guys getting to come up with this stuff? Why not take that $ & use it to restore sanity back to pt care?

This is a high handed comment. We accept our pain but that doesn’t mean it’s OK to leave us in immense suffering. Meditation, yoga, therapy etc will not cure us. It will not make it acceptable to torture patients whom suffer serious injuries.

Why didn’t I think of this? Tell myself I will get better and my rare autoimmune disease will magically go away! I bet United Healthcare will be thrilled to hear this so they no longer have to pay for my $77,000/mo IVIG Treatments! Thanks Stanford! GO BEARS! (Cal fan over here)

..and projecting that fear, anxiety and catastrophizing behaviour unto a pt when it isn't present, can also be an issue.

I can't take any painkillers. Trust me, I try all kinds of mental tricks to deal with my severe #Fibromyalgia pain, and even positive thinking doesn't work. I can ignore the pain for short bursts, but that's it. Telling myself it will get better has never, ever worked. Not once.

By this logic, I should have overcome my pain 20+ yrs ago. That's right, I accepted my pain BEFORE anti opioid zealots decided this was the best treatment for #ChronicPain. But a positive attitude wasn't enough. Thirteen yrs later opioids gave my life back to me. Now taken away😔
