average consumers are supposed to do this? lol not a chance

This is doing *everything* yourself, to learn and experience, which is not expected by the avg user. You don't need to know about servers & protocols to use Gmail, right?
-
No you don’t, so if lightning is going to be like that then I think it will find success, if average users have to open channels and nodes, etc. I don’t see it succeeding, I thought this had to be done, so that’s cool to hear.
-
I agree. Still even on the Pi, LND is on "autopilot" if you want, opening and maintaining channels without manual work. End user GUI will be more like
@JackMallers http://zap.jackmallers.com . -
That’s awesome haven’t seen this site before. I’m definitely feeling better about lightning, one other issue I’m sure you could clear up, is lightning owned by lightning labs or is it more like a protocol no one specifically owns?
-
Lightning is a protocol. There are 3 different implementations (at least) by
@lightning (LND),@acinq_co (eclair) and@Blockstream (c-lightning). All are free and open-source. The are completely interoperable, as specified in the BOLT spec:https://github.com/lightningnetwork/lnd#lightning-network-specification-compliance … -
Lightning
is as cypherpunk as it gets...
-
Wow. That’s awesome. I’ve got to dive deeper into this.

Awesome. How is the web interface coming along?
-
Have not been dabling with LND web interfaces for a while, focused more on the mobile apps and Electrum. Solutions are here (see tweets below) but I'm not sure about best practices regarding security. Input welcome!

Quick question: guide goes through B full node in addition to LN node However, Bitcoin full node is not required for Lightning correct? We can just exclude that portion of the walkthrough?
-
Lighting builds on top of Bitcoin, so a Bitcoin node is needed. To open a channel, Lighting generates a funding transaction on the Bitcoin blockchain. You also need to monitor the blockchain to prevent your counterparty from cheating.
-
At the moment, you need to run a Bitcoin Full Node yourself for mainnet, but in the future you will be able to use a remote Bitcoin node (like Bitcoin mobile wallets today).
-
Was about to follow up with that question - thank you for getting back with me so quickly Appreciate the effort to create the tutorial
-
My pleasure!

Great article! I didn't know that user must run full node to use LN. It will never scale until devs fix that, because average user won't download a full ledger (~200GB ATM) on his phone and in most countries internet connection is still limited, so 200GB will cost lots of money.
-
Is it possible at this moment to initiate a funding transaction (open a channel) by using SPV client? And to check only new blocks for 'cheating' transactions? If no, then are there any estimations when users can use LN with just SPV client coupled with 3rd party LN Watchtowers?
-
The average user just needs a LN wallet to exchange tokens Nodes are to facilitate those transactions, average user (payer/seller) doesn’t need to run one at home or on their phone
