I'm not arguing that we should let the virus take its course. I certainly think we should shield the vulnerable until a vaccine is available. But I don't see we can vaccinate everybody in the world, perhaps yearly. We haven't managed to eliminate measles; it only takes one shot.

This maybe true (though maybe not as vaccine immunity may last longer), but to gain immunity from a vaccine doesn’t kill people in the process as the development of herd immunity does.

1/2 Christine, I think this is one of the major misconceptions about
#SARS_CoV_2 immunity. Natural immunity may *strongly* differ from vaccine induced immunity. Take Zoster - Shingrix protects majority of vaccinees whereas natural ‚immunity‘ does not. -
We know that immunity to endemic Corinaviruses is shortlived, we’ll have to see about SARS-CoV-2. However, there’s not a shadow of a doubt that vaccines will be essential to overcome the pandemic. Relying on ‚natural‘ immunity will lead to tremendous suffering.

"natural immunity is probably better than vaccine immunity."-- nope! Where did you get this idea from?

To my knowledge, this is the case for most pathogens. An example:https://www.nature.com/articles/s41577-019-0143-6 …
