Peter Gøtzsche. Why would you surrender your last bit of integrity? You used to speak up against #antivax now you have become their Featured Speaker. I am confused: Do you think that provax people should refute invitations to speak at workshops organised by antivax? That would mean missing much-needed opportunities for provax and antivax to meet and exchange views.

Yes. Hardcore antivax is driven by attorney fees, book sales, selling cures for autism, etc. Exchanges of views irrelevant to them. Please do not support their cause by entering their logic-defying circus. However, do share your knowledge with the public, so they wont be conned.

Respectfully disagree. As tweeted: we should avoid the label "antivax". Most of the people coined "antivax" are simply concerned about the safety - and welcome science and dialogue. Imo, both sides should accept invitations to share view points and be challenged by others'.

Antivaxers frequently try to falsely label themselves as "vaccine safety advocates." They are nothing of the sort.

Curious: how would you know that somebody raising questions about the safety of vaccines did that "falsely"?

Also, when talking about "vaccine safety," antivaxers often make up nonexistent "risks" of vaccination (e.g., autism, SIDS) and/or vastly exaggerate actual risks of vaccination and/or vastly downplay the benefits.

I could provokingly propose that that the people writing on this thread might be very reluctant to listen to scientific evidence, which contradicted that "all vaccines are always beneficial for all" - pls make sure that equal standards apply🙂

Provoking solely for the sake of provoking. How entertaining. Do you acknowledge that there is an antivaccine movement and that they are a threat to public health?

I will continue to provoke (with the hope of also sparking a bit of reflection): There is an antivaccine movement, but there is also an almost religious provaccine movement and it is also a threat to public health: prematurely closing research questions and polarising the debate

So you're claiming that the provaccine movement, which formed in response to the antivax movement, also poses a risk to public health? That's really out there - especially since your claim is false.

Can you give an example showing how this “almost religious provaccine movement” is a threat to public health? I’m genuinely curious, btw 😊

I'm more interested in her portraying vaccine science as religious faith rather than science. Thats a common tactic of science denialists of all stripes, for example, climate science deniers and creationists.

To the willfully ignorant science might seem a bit like mysticism. But it’s not a religion, it acceptance of measurable objective facts.

There’s the anti-vax movement, and then there’s science. Science works via hypotheses tested by experiment. Vaccines are a proven public health success story. The MMR conspiracy theory has been debunked. There are known side effects of vaccination but none outweigh the benefits.

There are typically three questions to answer in science: 1. Is there any reason to think X? 2. Is X mechanistically plausible? 3. Is there good evidence for X? Most scientists won’t start looking for X unless 1 and 2 are proven. Most antivax claims do not pass these tests.

One of the most important questions in science should be: is the surprising observation repeatable?! If so, it deserves our attention, even if it seems implausible based on current knowledge.
