(Passing note: it's nice that the reporter gives a hotlink to back up the statistic--except the link is obviously broken.) 3/
Per the Census Bureau (https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/VT/PST045217 …), Vermont's 2017 population is about 624k, and 1.3% of that, or 8,100 are Black or African-American. 4/
Meanwhile, according to Vermont Department of Corrections (http://www.doc.state.vt.us/about/reports/fy15-doc-annual-report/view … -- my link actually works), the _avg. total incarcerated population_ in 2015 (latest available) was 1,997. If _every incarcerated Vermonter were black_, that would be less than 25% of them. 5/
(About 25% of those are in jail, the rest in prison. There's also some wobble in the statistics depending on how you count averages, and about 25% of Vermont's inmates are held outside Vermont itself.) 6/
Ah! But what about federal prisons? It appears there are no federal prisons in Vermont at all. https://www.bop.gov/about/statistics/population_statistics.jsp …
I'm unable to find an independent source of Mic's claim that 10.7% of the prison population is black, but if we believe it, then there are about 214 black prisoners in Vermont at any given time. That's 2.6% of the black population. Mic should be ashamed. 8/
The article is full of people being baffled by the statistics the reporter presents. They're baffled because the reporter's an idiot and the statistics are false. 9/9
