I want to agree with this, in principle. In practice, I think these kinds of phrases are much more often clumsy power plays employed when a person just wants you to accept something they really don't know. Actual experts can cite actual reasons, sources, and explanations instead.

one big qualification on this is there are a lot of fields where that should read "hard data, theories drawn from it, *if any*" -- experts (if any) just have to muddle thru without ideal epistemic authority bc the research just hasn't been done (& sometimes can't be, for reasons)

just off the top of my head there are a few dozen big questions abt e.g. personal agency and structural constraints that I'd *love* to have good answers for, backed up with hard evidencefrom population biology or neuroscience, but the science just isn't there yet

there the marker of actual-expertise is the actual expert will tell you flat out "yeah, it is all anecdata, intuition and armchair theorizing & all *highly* motivated, & aware of the epistemic limits of that, but for the time being it'll have to do bc it's all we've got"

Agree with this quite strongly, and which is part of why I think, *in practice*, the "speaking as an X" is more a sign of a manipulator than a genuine knower. Real expertise (and the kind of people that become real experts) are much more likely to employ the soft sell.

oh, agreed, but I don't think "speaking as a" is that strong an indicator in isolation. more like someone's showing signs of intellectual honesty and good faith then I'll give their "speaking as" statements some weight

Yup, also agreed, context is huge here. Hard to know the value of an indicator like this "on average". Had a bad experience in uni (psych, social psych) where people were highly ideological, plus now Twitter, so my personal bias is to see this as a mostly negative indicator.

yup. I got kind of blindsided by twitter bc I'm just not used to moving in circles where that pose has any social currency in the first place, really

      1. the likely motive to take a stand that marks you as an unpleasant fringe weirdo is bc you sincerely believe it 2. social-justice leftism is fringe-weirdo stuff in most of the contexts I exist in iRL C. these twitter people must be basically pretty sincere on average

This makes me realize "sincere and honest but highly untrustworthy" is a character description that is not necessarily paradoxical or even uncommon...
