Not accurate. Grad school is for people who couldn't get enough of prison-kindergarten, ie broken children. It *is* abusive and absurd -- but you have to work to get in, work harder to stay in, and whose fault is that, really?https://twitter.com/HalifaxShadow/status/996143990649991168 …

On the one hand, it's tragic that academy has been zombified by turning it into knowledge-worker reparations, but on the other hand it's hilarious that these people are making themselves suffer so much in the process. You wanted full communism, you reinvented despotism. As usual.

Surely this is just Moloch? Too many people going into grad school creates an ever-increasing arms race of productivity to establish the pecking order

Why are they going in the first place? Who told them it was a good idea? Why *these* people? What defines 'productivity' now?

1950: graduate cohort of 3, all of whom are natural academics; all three find tenure-track jobs. All work on their own research at their own pace; because the job market is decent there is no real pecking order.

2018: grad cohort of 12; two will find tenure-track jobs. In the rush to stand out within the cohort, there is a strong publish-or-perish mentality, and the need to establish a pecking order inevitably creates status conflicts.

Sure, but I don't understand what your point is here. I'm asking why people keep running into the meat grinder.

I think that might be changing. A good friend of mine is at one of the top PhD programs in our field, and for two years running the incoming cohort has been unusually tiny.

The awful job market may finally be translating into depressed supply of incoming grad students.

Re: why people keep running into the meat grinder, I think it's partially credential inflation, but also the opacity of the time lag. If you do a two-year MA and then a six-year PhD, that's nearly a decade before you become part of the "underemployed adjunct" statistics.

I'm currently teaching English in China and see something similar in my own field. TEFL in China is a joke, but the time lag is huge. If you send your kid to Future Harvard International Kindergarten (a real place), but his teacher is completely incompetent...

...the consequences aren't clear until your kid starts applying to foreign universities, by which time the teacher is long gone. Education is nearly unique in that any action or intervention taken doesn't show results for years, and the results always have massive cofounders.

time lag is why commodification (here I mean esp. enslaving itself to productivity metrics imported from commodity-production enterprise) is an intellectual catastrophe too, btw. the real value of original basic research in a field may not be clear until generations later

academia isn't the only place significant new knowledge can be made but among the social institutions we've got it's uniquely the one that has creating the conditions for basic research as an (ostensible) primary goal instead of a fortunate contingent feature
