What's going on? The current episode of rapprochement does seem different. But they're crazy, and certainly capable of deceit. If this isn't just another juche-waffle, what is it? Well, what's the craziest thing you can imagine from a nation with a reputation for crazy?

Trump has mentioned wanting to meet Kim. It's been floated in the news that Trump could meet Kim in the DMZ, after Kim did the same with the current head of South Korea. Again, free yourself from preconceptions. Ask yourself what these professionally crazy people are doing.

Kim likes to murder people. NK citizens have been executed in flagrantly gruesome ways. He also sent a hit squad after his inoffensive brother, and had him murdered in an airport with a nerve agent. He's starving his own country while he dines on delicacies.

@St_Rev as a long-time observer, but I'm interested in other folks' ideas too. Maybe it's Korean unification. Who knows. But I imagine it isn't.#NorthKorea2 replies 0 retweets 0 likesShow this thread -

Juche is all about NK proving they're independent, & their dick is just as big as China, USA, Russia, France, &c. But they can't in any traditional sense win any sort of war/contest. They can, however, kill people. & I don't think they care what happens to their own citizens.

KJU is a young monarch who is the center of an imperial cult, but in real life he has to share power with a nuclear Stalinist military, who have very different priorities. Meanwhile, China is getting really sick of their shit.

There may or may not have been a major nuclear accident near China's border which may or may not have spewed radionuclides into their territory. So there's that. Trump is playing the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madman_Diplomacy … card.

It may make sense for him to throw a chunk of the brass under the bus to stabilize his own internal position. Who knows? He's a mostly unknown quantity; don't center NK's behavior in his person.

I probably shouldn't center NK's behavior around him, but I have trouble imagining a Gorbachev-style transition. Or maybe Kim is Gorbachev, but given his actions, I doubt it. I hope he is, but I don't think so.

He's not Gorbachev. He's a weak king surrounded by much bigger powers, trying to secure his power both internally and externally. He doesn't have to stick to 50 year old policy if it doesn't serve him personally.

True. He's a lot less practical and intelligent than Gorbachev. I also imagine he has a god complex.
