weird question: do journalists (thinking in particular local here) usually have contracts that limit their ability to earn income by publishing in any/other publications? could they setup a patreon type thing?

it seems like a model that good journalists would be attracted to (and the shitty ones would be terrified of, naturally) since it's the larger firms being sole-source-of-revenue that right now ties them all together
