There's a sort of magical thinking involved; being physically adjacent to wisdom ought to adhere to the practitioner, like a miasma. And certainly there's a deep _analogy_ to monasticism in the job, or used to be.
And then you find out that even Professional Ethicists, the actual specialists, don't appear to be any better or wiser in their lives than anyone else, and maybe worse. It seems the whole thing is an inverse cargo cult--imitating the forms of a prescientific system!
