I probably agree. But I don't think anyone's going to examine it dispassionately at this point. It's far too fraught, and the interrogation of social media is necessarily going to be about some kind of normative view of society.

I don't give any of the people actively bringing up these complaints credit, but I *do* think recommendation algorithms from search providers need a lot of thought as to how they work. Google / YouTube already do this because folks try to game them.

There was the Facebook thing a while back about how pro-Trump ads were charged at 1/5 the rate of pro-Clinton, because the Algorithm[tm] knew they were more controversial and generated more clicks and revenue. That's... something worth thinking about too.

I think once you have a recommendation engine you may be inherently exercising editorial judgment - even if automated and unintentional - and so should at least *understand* what that judgment actually *is*.
