I love the way this thread reframes 'not aggressively censoring wrongthink' as "misinformation promoting". There are many awful blooches; this is one of them. https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/972591994659745792 …

A partisan newspaper has a party line. If they publish something, it's part of what they want people to believe. Her objection to """THE ALGORITHM""" is it's failing to *exclude* stuff *she doesn't want people to see*.
-
If you can't distinguish between these cases, I don't think there's any value in discussing this further.
-
Her specific error is called 'personalization' -- seeing all occurrences as a) willful b) directed at her. Like going into a grocery store and angrily pointing at the peanuts "DON'T YOU KNOW I'M **ALLERGIC**?"
-
Put another way, she's claiming oppression when she's merely *not being obeyed*.
-
A recommendation engine is a (mis)information promoter.
-
Is a library one? Results have to come out in *some* order. Should every process prioritize 'won't offend ZT'?
-
So no mechanism that sorts available options and floats some to the top can be viewed as a promotion system?
-
Promotion is an agentic act. The pernicious sleight of hand underlying all these tech critiques is (deliberately) confusing 'X does not positively serve my ideology' with 'X serves an enemy ideology'.
