"Conversation", as code word, means specific pre-vetted lines of discussion, ie plausibly-deniable *lectures*. You can tell he's using the coded meaning, because of the context: "hold ourselves publicly accountable towards progress."

Defending 'conversation', in the normal sense, isn't compatible with being "accountable towards progress". Push the discourse in a predetermined direction, or respect people's own lived experience: choose one.
