Study a few years back indicated that there was no significant change in physical activity over the last few centuries -- people replaced physical labor and walking to get around with working out and jogging.

There's also the fact that pets, lab animals and wild rats are becoming obese at similar rates as humans. Can't exactly pin cultural degeneracy on a laboratory mouse or a sewer rat.

If both, that could suggest something terrifying. If just those around people, a probable dietary link. (On an anecdotal note, I stopped feeding my cats grain based food and they stopped gaining weight.)
