responding mostly to the joke format of [2011 twitter: something cute and whimsical // 2018 twitter: death and destruction] (what's the word, not being "innocent"?)

i think there's so much going on it's hard to condense, but i think earlier incarnations of internet communities were fairly isolated people finding eachother on this New Amazing Internet and forming new tribes

somewhere between then and now we hid a watershed moment where instead of creating healthy tribes, an equal number of unhealthy people found eachother and formed tribes of self-reinforcing bad/unhealthy behaviour

if you neutralize the observation, it becomes indistinguishable: the fringe found fellow supporters, and became louder. for awhile, separation of the various fringes made everyone believe it was all fine and warm and dandy. now, we know otherwise.

that's probably true to a certain extent, but there is definitely a weird entryist/cooption vibe (spaces created for disaffected people to belong and do [whatever] with other people suddenly finding their spaces invaded)
