There seems to be some quality in brutalism that attracts these kinds of uses: bleak public housing projects, offices for government bureaucracies, jails... I’m having a hard time coming up with examples of brutalist architecture in buildings people actually use voluntarily

Okay those are indeed pretty cool, and they don’t exude overwhelming “Those that belong to the emperor” vibes in their style either In fact, that’s probably closer to the true objection: architecture that Belongs To The Emperor is evil, and the Emperor just likes brutalism a lot

Yeah, makes perfect sense now. This could probably be tested empirically by asking people who think brutalism is evil 1. to rate the evilness of a set of brutalist and non-brutalist buildings of malicious and non-malicious design 2. to classify those buildings by their style

If the hypothesis that people are using “brutalism” as synonymous for “sucks the dick of Power” is true, then they’d be less likely to identify humane brutalist buildings as brutalist and more likely to misclassify non-brutalist malicious architecture as brutalist

I definitely noticed such a tendency in myself because I had to do a bit of “huh, brutalism can look like that too?” about some of those examples

I think it's a mistake to assess from small photographs, though. The problem with brutalism isn't what it looks like from a helicopter or as a tabletop model! The problem is being inside its space.
