I think there's a confounding survivorship bias issue. An aesthetic appreciation of mathematics is important in keeping the mathematician motivated to do math. Not convinced it's otherwise useful.

I'm asserting something slightly different, which is that a mathematician's "beautiful or ugly" judgment comes from the same place as her "feels true or feels false" judgment.
