Possible for *both* graphs to look worse and worse while pop mean doesn't change *at all*. (Actually pop mean is getting worse too, but)

I don't /believe/ that this is the case but it's a statistic I can check
-
It's definitely the case, BA rate went from like 12% to 40% or something in the last 50 years.
-
It's *also* true that the white mortality rate is increasing slightly. But this makes it look staggeringly worse than it is.
-
I doubt that the degree rate for 60+s has increased that much, and yet there they are
-
Pardon my continued inability to read a chart, mid-40s seems like the departure point
-
GI bill after WWII kicked off a steadily increasing trend in college attendance. I'm also suspicious of changes in mortality reporting...
-
...but that's an issue that would be very difficult to get a handle on.
-
Oh. True. Reporting effects are a pretty compelling confounding factor.

Definitely true, however you're still talking a vast swath of population. % completing BA for 1980 cohort is only ~30%
-
I know the underlying trend for white mortality is worse, but this exaggerates it significantly. Seems less than useful.
-
Also dubious about stability of reporting procedures affecting reports of drug & suicide mortality over time, but that's hard to unpack.

I can't even read the graph
-
I think it's mortality from drugs+alcohol+suicide by double age group, ie the pale blue line is 1980 births, cuts off bc they're only 37 now
-
what does the y-axis number represent?
-
Mortality per 100k, I think.
-
that would make sense

Years ago I read that in parts of India, so many people have a B. A. that it's a minimum requirement for jobs that don't really need one...
-
I daresay that's true in some other places besides India.
