The data you should look at is on pp 29-34 of http://www.gao.gov/assets/690/683984.pdf … and there are several big takeaways: 2/
First, they start counting on September 12, 2001. For some weird reason. I guess it was the beginning of the tax year or something? 3/
Second, "Far Right Violent Extremist-Motivated Attacks" are 73% of the incidents but 47% of the _deaths_. Why center the first statistic? 4/
Third is the base rate issue. If we're to believe the news these days, everybody who voted for Trump is a Far Right Violent Extremist. 5/
Well, that's what, about 20% of the population? Meanwhile, Muslims are 1% of the population; probably at most 5% of them are Islamist. 6/
A more sober estimate still suggests Far Right Violent Extremists outnumber Islamists by at least 50 to 1. 7/
Minor takeaways: Some of the incidents on the Far Right Violent Extremist list are questionable, like the IRS plane crash guy. 8/
The NYT article is very very VERY concerned about Muslims being targeted by violence. But the incidents don't bear that out. 9/
Most Far Right Violent Extremism targets: blacks, gays, hispanics, cops. NYT has to go outside the report to find any targeting Muslims. 10/
As usual, NYT starts with a story, then bricolages factoids until they form a shell in the shape of the plotline they already chose. 11/11
Oh hey look at that, apparently I'm a Far Right Violent Extremist too! 12/11pic.twitter.com/yQ53o4TSHs
