Though the graph clipped from Slate (number Americans killed vs age at death) is clearly bogus, absurdly so.

yeah, I should use this Milwaukee age distribution instead, suggests white users (most opioid od) average late 20s.pic.twitter.com/Ni4qKsXcAg
-
Eyeballing that, looks like mode is early 30s but average is still in the 40s.
-
do you have ideas for a source for a national distribution? I agree it's a weak part of the post.
-
I don't, I'd go to CDC first but I dunno if their web data digs that deep. I'm just an amateur.
-
Question I'm really interested in is whether reporting policy changed formally or otherwise--opioid deaths usually polydrug.
-
So it's plausible to me that the entire trend could be an artifact of "alcohol" or "benzo" fatalities becoming "opioid"
-
an interesting question. Tho alcohol deaths have been shooting up too!

overdose deaths reporting/data varies a lot (and is especially unreliable when it comes to poly-drug overdoses (like benzo+opioids))
-
Yeah I'm kind of suspicious that a lot of the trend may reflect changes in reporting policy.
-
Drug Warriors have been trying to kickstart a new opioid crackdown for about three years now, so I wonder about cause of death data
-
yes there's cases where people OD on black-market fent that get blamed on "prescription opioids" so the deaths data is f'ed up
-
I specifically wonder if poly deaths that would have been attributed to benzos before are now pinned on opioids.

as an experiment we should crowdfund to give out free medical grade opiates and see if the OD decline
-
the "free medical grade opioids" thing has already been tried, people overdose extremely rarely on those
-
if you remove dose uncertainty and impurities, and remove the need to do a synergistic effect with EtOH or benzos,
-
opioids are shockingly safe.
-
opioid users can live long lives. If they use safeguards, moderation, and their supply is clean.
-
just like many other drugs. Adulteration imo is feuled by regulation, crappier product is cheaper than finding controlled pharmaceuticals
-
what nobody saw coming was the steep drop in heroin prices in tandem with heroin being stepped on w/fentanl
-
one other thing I am very curious about. Method of use: used to be totally different from East Coast &West
