@St_Rev is that buried somewhere in Science and Sanity?
-

-
@ngvrnd It's Hayakawa's simplification. -
@St_Rev OK. Haven't read Hayakawa. But I've pored over every page of my ancient library bound copy of Science and Sanity...
-
@ngvrnd Hayakawa worked really hard to make Korzybski understandable to the masses. -
@St_Rev I should probably read him then... As a SANITY CHECK.#sorrynotsorry -
@ngvrnd Actually had a short unit on Hayakawa in one of my high school English classes. Better days, man.

@St_Rev possibly related http://worrydream.com/LadderOfAbstraction/ … -
@ckhonson He makes the important comment that moving between levels is powerful, and getting stuck is a trap. Applies to writing too. -
@ckhonson But the original diagram is Hiyakawa's, mid-20th century, after Korzybski.

@St_Rev@simplic10 The comic thing here is that the true “cow” abstraction ladder has a weird gap for “both sexes of this species”. -
@colbycosh@simplic10 Well, you can throw 'cattle' on the ladder at 4.5, that's not a problem. -
@St_Rev@simplic10 Sure, but there’s still that missing word at 4.25 for one… cattle. -
@colbycosh@simplic10 'bovine', 'b. taurus'. but I take your point.

@St_Rev on this, the best thing I've ever seen is bret victor's interactive essay http://worrydream.com/LadderOfAbstraction/ … -
@Grognor Yeah but he doesn't mention the antecedents. I linked the image above when someone linked worrydream & implied he invented it.

@St_Rev maps can be drawn with info across/straddling multiple ladders? Each having its own level of abstraction incorporated in to the map? -
@thejaymo Well, take Google Maps. It overlays photographs (low-level abstractions) with words, numbers and lines (higher-level).

@St_Rev proper name bias: tendency to favor that which has a proper name (cecil the lion, historic buildings, my cast iron pot Potty) -
