One of the things that got me out of SF fandom was getting snookered by some of these people in the early-mid 00s.
I remember buying Doctorow's first novel in hardcover and...it was just awful. Scalzi's first one was decent but later ones, ugh.

Once again I'd bought into a hype machine. Idiot. Wasn't until late 00s, though, that I started noticing how *nasty* a lot of them were.

@St_Rev which was that? down and out in the magic kingdom? i tried to read it, totally failed. terrible -
@mr_archenemy Yeah. Bad on many levels. -
@St_Rev@mr_archenemy Wha? I thought it was alright. It didn't seem to try to be much more than it was. Also, it was short -
@St_Rev But what was bad about it? I'm curious, if you remember -
@blue_traveler 1) There's writing about what interests you, and there's masturbating on the page. Doctorow's Disneycommunism is the latter. -
@blue_traveler 2) The characters were unpleasant and boring. 3) The book was unpleasant and boring. -
@St_Rev Okay, I agree with that description. Setting was somewhat suspect, and I didn't care about the characters

@jaspergregory Yup. But back around 2000 when Boingboing was one of the only interesting sites on the web...who knew?
