Am I “Kind Of New-Age-y, Better At Math Than Usual For That Demographic, Angrily Denying Being New-Age-y If Asked”? http://slatestarcodex.com/2015/01/21/these-are-a-few-more-of-my-least-favorite-things/ …
@Meaningness Not at all. Mom decided years in advance I would do physics. She was crazy & I mostly went along so she wouldn't kill herself.

@St_Rev Any reason your Mom wanted you to be a physicist, other than craziness? -
@Meaningness She was forced to drop out of Chicago for murky reasons, later got a master's in physics. So, projected narcissism more or less -
@St_Rev Familiar pattern. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0465016901/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0465016901&linkCode=as2&tag=aro-20&linkId=S3PUJHACCCCLRQBS … is about this. I found it helpful 25 years ago; not sure how it would hold up now. -
@Meaningness On quick glance, not sure it applies--was profoundly "gifted", also profoundly disabled in ways not understood at the time. -
@Meaningness Maybe it amounts to the same problem though--never getting support I needed badly. -
@St_Rev Is mostly about how parental narcissism-by-proxy causes particular patterns of problems for gifted children in adult life. -
@Meaningness Yeah, some of it sounds familiar, some very off -
@St_Rev ditto for me

@St_Rev I realized as a sophomore that I was only working so hard at academics in order to please my parents (Mom mostly). Big crisis. -
@St_Rev After a total slack year, realized I wanted to learn stuff for my own, other reasons. That was good. -
@St_Rev It was still hard to break away when I got my PhD, choosing not to be a prof. Again that’s something I thought my Mom wanted -
@St_Rev and it was hard not to, but it would have made me miserable. My sister I think caved and I think it mostly did make her miserable. -
@St_Rev although all this was based on unspoken expectations from when we were children, not anything anyone said at the time.
