How much of what we think we know about the history of Buddhism even in the late 20th century is propaganda? #curious
@Meaningness Of course, in disengaging it from sangha and practice one loses a great deal. Maybe everything!

@St_Rev Maybe… but that piece on Tokugawa Zen suggests that it was resurrected almost entirely from texts, with the practice entirely lost. -
@Meaningness Sure, but there's no living Zhuang-Lao religion today, reconstructed or otherwise. There *are* other, living Daoisms, yes.

@St_Rev I’m afraid Buddhist tantra may have to be revived from texts alone at some point, similarly. Practice may be totally gone in 25years -
@Meaningness It'll be totally gone eventually! And then someone will reconstruct it. And then that'll get lost. -
@St_Rev Probably… if tantra is an accurate reflection of reality, it will be rediscovered. Continuity would save time&effort though. -
@Meaningness Some of it has been absorbed into Western hermeticism, I think. Could be wrong though. -
@St_Rev Yes, via Crowley, e.g., but mostly only the Hindu version, which I think is fundamentally wrong :-( -
@Meaningness Too bad we can't test for meme spatter. -
@St_Rev Now there is a phrase to conjure with! (What does it mean?) -
