Just finished reading Tom Bates's RADS and I dunno if I'm gonna do a full #radicalbookclub on it, but it's well worth reading. More than the actual bombing it recounts, the book's depiction of the radicalization spiral of the time is depressing and quite scary.pic.twitter.com/k5h3dLHmJn

One thing my readings of radical history have made clear is that Lefty radical violence spikes after growth followed by setbacks -- i.e., the movement grows a lot but fails to achieve its purpose, so some percentage of their people escalate.

The other bad news is that support for violence among the people who *don't* escalate also spikes, at least in the short term. The slightly cheering news is that most of them reconsider, but this still leaves a sizable contingent of admirers.

Before the 1970 bombing covered in RADS, for example, violent revolutionary rhetoric was sky-high. Afterward there were plenty of supporters -- at first. But most gradually sobered up and drifted away. There was a loooong hangover of violent Lefty radicals afterward, though.

For the record, the bombers (known as the New Year's Gang) fled and were sheltered in Canada by the leftist underground even though the bombing had killed a man (physicist Robert Fassnacht). One was never caught. Two got light sentences. The leader, sentenced to 23 yrs, served 7.

After leaving prison, the bombing ringleader returned to the campus that he had bombed and set up a juice stall. Not kidding. #the70sya

"Stephanie Fassnacht completed a long career at [UWM], occupying an office just blocks from the site of her husband's death. She stated that she harbored "no ill will" toward Karl Armstrong "and never did." Instead she held the Board of Regents responsible."

David Fine's article on Wikipedia is "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Fine_(activist) …". As opposed to David Fine (murderer).
