I think there's several things conflated here. I think SOME folk low on a dominant social ladder will naturally break off into oppositional cliques where they can be of higher relative status. Trailer park Nazis, purple haired feminists, medieval satanists, gangs- same same.
I ALSO think that as demographics shift (or arguably are deliberately shifted) in traditionally Euro-white nations, a great many people formerly quite sanguine are getting more racially tribal, esp. in the face of constant racial identity politics.
Finally, there's just life experience. The middle class white kid in an affluent mostly white suburb is going to have radically different relationships and experiences than the working-class kid in mostly non-white southern Arizona or urban Detroit.
All of which is to say I guess, it's another case of dis-aggregation is next to godliness.
This is interesting and plausible, and tracks with the way that psychological breakdown finds different expressions in different societies (eg. hikikomori vs mass shootings). As culture changes, basic human issues becomes expressed differently.
Could just be that once any particular flavor of racial crazy meets reality, the simplest answer to the rough edges is always "apply more shellac". Apartheid had the same problem, and the same solution.
The challenge is to figure out what today is "transgressive." That is the unifying idea which binds these things together. Satanism is definitely no longer transgressive; in fact, Satanists are some of the most stable, reasonable people I know.
Nazi-ism is still pretty transgressive, but it's extremely easy and hard to differentiate yourself from "all those annoying EdgeLords." That makes it less than ideal for people who want to make a splash as mentally disturbed. But – still a big player.
It has to be something that "everybody" knows is bad, because being bad is being special, but not so obscure that people don't recognize it as bad and special. There are, at any given time, a very narrow range of ideas that fit that architecture.
The only thing I can think of that's more transgressive is child abuse. Hope I didn't just predict the future there.
