Yellowjackets keep swarming the food I put out for the stray cats. Traps haven't been doing much. Finally found something that seems to work: I took a handful of cloves, pulverized them with a mortar and pestle, and sprinkled them around the dish. Yellowjackets are gone.
Eugenol (the main component of clove oil) kills and repels wasps -- used to be able to get it as Environmentally Conscious wasp spray but I haven't found it in a long time.

is eugenol safe for cats? google is giving me totally opposite answers, none of which are from sites I trust

I wouldn't give them clove oil, but I'm not putting this stuff in the food dish, just a circle around it.
