I'm not the one having a tantrum here. This was a conversation between me and one of my oldest friends that you horned in on. You've just spend four tweets ranting at me over a *single letter.* Since you can't seem to find the mute button, I'm going to take care of it for youhttps://twitter.com/arslshakeel/status/1160652149686263811 …

Are you sure you don't? You've just spent quite a long time arguing over the internet and now seem to be having quite the tantrum at me, someone who is likely younger than you. As I said, I'm not for this sort of "discussion", it's not worth it.

“problematic” is a reliable indicator that the person uttering it is an idiot.

'Problematic' has an important meaning and no good substitute. It's just that most of the people using it think it means 'haram'. It's what happens when students don't understand what their professors are saying, but slavishly believe what they think they hear.

"I suspect X might have deleterious effects but have no evidence" may be clumsy, but sometimes using the longer phrasing is better.

'Problematic' actually means: adj: Posing a problem; difficult to solve. adj: Open to doubt; debatable. adj. Not settled; unresolved or dubious. Notice that this is almost the _opposite_ of how it's used by idiots.

          1) just say "is a difficult problem" if it is actually a problem and is difficult (n.b. most of the things claimed problematic isn't really a problem in any sane sense) 2) say debatable or unresolved if you believe actual meaningful competing models/interpretations exist

there is sufficient vocabulary, but using it would reduce the "fudge factor" for making insinuations of vague "subliminal-style" peril without being forced to give evidence

I think the idiots are using the word as intended, but doing it without finesse that allows academics to get away with "problematic" claims
