It's a shitty gimmick to get your phone number to prevent making multiple secured accounts. I used a second phone number using Google Voice. I set that up for 2FA via text and then that allowed me to use a dedicated OTP authenticator.
Weirdly not, though. You can have multiple Twitter accounts (with different email addresses) tied to the same phone number and it doesn't cause any issues. I was doing a security audit on my accounts last night and removed my phone number from several, which is how I found this
Yeah, you can set up multiple accounts; but, since they can easily check each of the 200 or so accounts a person can make uses the same phone number, they can easily ban all the accounts at once.
