I remember going to hobby shops in the 80s, where there were still small bottles of chemicals for sale to do experiments, albeit missing a few from the 60s-era kids' chemistry book range.

I had a chemistry set with some reasonably dangerous stuff (sulfuric acid, hydrogen cyanide). It was all low-concentration enough that if I spilled it on myself my parents would have time to take me to the hospital, but still.
