would best form of taxes be a VAT and property tax on most valuable parts of cities??? I think my only issue with UBI is the idea its not clawed back as you make more income, or at least it isnt in yangs version I feel like a VAT would be a hard sell but there must be some angle

i thought you could phase it out in such a way that every point you are still making more money, i dont mean clawing it all back at one exact point but phasing it out gradually
-
Relatively diminishing returns are still diminishing returns.
-
ya but the welfare trap is when if you cross arbitrary line huge amount of benefits dissapear, im talking abt gradually taking it away so every point of income earning you are still earning more each step of the way
-
That's a welfare cliff, welfare trap includes that but also includes the situation where your effective marginal tax rate is 95% because of phaseouts
-
well i wasnt meaning that sudden a phase out i thought negative income tax for ex was more gradual then that
-
Also remember, most of the modern UBI proposals are at least partially justified specifically to deliver some of the benefits of the inflation you were doing anyway directly to consumers rather than just chucking it into banks.
-
obviously you could design a negative income rate that avoids the welfare trap, but that's too hard for people to understand and so UBI short-circuits that line of criticism
