Laughed. But are there fictional narratives that do hold your interest? If so, can you get a bead on what distinguishes them?

When I was a kid I read obsessively. My parents had pulp paperbacks going back to the 50s. Haven't been able to read a novel in years, though -- both my eyes and my brain are going.

I like The Venture Bros., whose writing is extremely tight, dense and polished. I've never liked movies, with the exception of Hong Kong action flicks.

I like William Burroughs' nonfiction. I remember liking his Place of Dead Roads trilogy, but that may have been pretentious hallucination on my part.

Generally I have little interest in characterization, whatever that means, and I loathe what I think of as 'relationship drama and uncomfortable pauses'. I have trouble inferring character motivations so it's hard for me to follow a lot of plots.

I’ve seen a few episodes of The Simpsons. A few clips of the others, at most. Seeing the symbols for bromine & barium & at once feeling sure that those elements wouldn’t play much role in Breaking Bad really hardened my resolve not to watch it. (Did either element show up much?)

TV was destroyed by the remote control. If it is at a high or low emotional energy, you get either twitchy or bored and change the channel, so TV carefully stays inside a fixed narrow medium-level emotional energy band.

What's the difference between ignorance and apathy? . . . I don't know and I don't care.
