Hadn't read Kevin's piece, I was just expanding on 'no, college AND moon shots are bad'

I remember reading Charlton's essay recently. A lot of good points, but way too long, and I also have a strong bozo flag set on Charlton for hazy reasons.
-
Yes on all counts. “Reactionary Catholic shaking cane at cloud” was part of it. He didn’t quite come out and say “if you believed in God, you’d do science right” but it’s barely below the surface. He did accurately characterize symptoms of moral bankruptcy though!

Yeah, startling coincidence. NASA delenda est, of course. Universities I’m still somewhat agnostic about. Probably doomed, but it might be just barely not too late to rescue some aspects of them.

There was a really interesting piece I saw recently about the scientific value of NSF bio-med grants vs Howard Hughes Institute grants. Gigantic difference. I’m forgetting the details (may be able to locate if you are interested) but bureaucratic overhead at NSF was major factor

I think universities are so far gone that it's probably not possible to save them as intact institutions. At best you could carve out chunks of a handful of disciplines, but there's more tumor than tissue. (Apply 'Rev is very depressed' filter to this)

The Wansink case shows that it's possible to be well-funded, highly successful and indeed celebrated, for years, in STEM mode, while being 100% junk. One must assume that the patient's immune system is basically gone.

Right. OTOH, there are intrepid science reformers who are making surprising headway. Including these guys who exposed Wansink:https://twitter.com/jamesheathers/status/970081552851001344 …

Intrepid-ish.
