How to climb out of the pit of nihilism. (Or existentialism, which is nihilism lite.) That’s a bad place to find yourself, and there is an antidote. Clear and concise (despite seemingly long table of contents).https://twitter.com/coyotespike/status/1127255586398199808 …

He’s borrowing from the Dreyfus and Kelley book here. That passage in the book didn’t work for me, but maybe just because I don’t much like coffee and like the hassle of making it even less. Not sure. I think it’s true that rituals create meaning; wish the example had worked 4 me
-
There’s also sportsball rituals in the book and those didn’t work for me either. I think they were trying to find ones “everyone” can relate to, and specifically avoiding religious & political ones to avoid readers getting stuck on the object level there
-
Although they did discuss the nuremberg rallies as a cautionary tale
-
I understand the question even less now.
-
Yeah I was just expressing my own confusion, sorry!
-
Is this related to thing where people who quit smoking don't know what to do with their hands?
-
Now I’m even more confused :)
-
I think the answer is “no” but I’m not sure exactly what point the book was making there. I think they were trying to say “ritual isn’t some exotic thing people only do in Africa, it’s part of your daily life” but the example doesn’t work (for me).

Conditioned response. Eventually you learn to enjoy the feeling the bell stimulates /in addition to/ the feeling the dog food stimulates.

I took it as an homage to Zen. There's also a coffee-in-itself/Keurig joke to make somewhere but I'm not formulating anything useful

appreciating the ritual means that it's not just the coffee itself and its effects when consumed, but also the cascade of sensations from making it (smell, sounds, heat etc) that comes to feel like a familiar and well-worn footpath. and the comforting rhythm of doing it each day.
-
you don't get the familiar path / comforting rhythm feelings just from incidentally grabbing a cup of coffee on your way to work one random day. tho you might thoroughly enjoy consuming the coffee, this version isn't a ritual without a sensually engaging process and a rhythm.

as i understand, the idea is that the process of selecting the right coffee beans and brewing coffee plays an important role in your enjoyment of coffee much like how some people enjoy rolling their tobacco. the point of these activities is to not just get a fix of your fav stim
-
while they are central to the ritual, it is the entire process which enhances the enjoyment of the substance. it is not just coffee but it is coffee prepared and consumed in a manner highly specific to your tastes. getting a starbucks is not the same thing
