Whenever I see someone mad about "helicopter ride" jokes I search their T/L for "guillotine" out of habit.

Vice-versa is also fair. I don't cotton to helicopter jokes either.

I cotton to heli references, but am also not offended that other side uses guillotine references. Offense is silly in total war. "Oh no, the soviets have nuclear bombs!!!" well, so do we /shrug

It's also a part of functional retribution in war. They gassed us, so we gassed them back, so nobody uses gas, because everybody has gas, why do we have gas, they'll never gas us.

& somewhat orthogonally, but relevantly, it is an open question whether there is such a thing as a bright line of "total" or "existential" war in the first place, tbqh "who desires the ends must embrace the means" has flaws but at least illusory objectivity isn't one of them

That's why I like Clausewitz's opinion, that war is politics by other means. It is part and parcel of the interaction between nations, the pressing of two opposing wills together. We think of war as the bullets and death bit. A more holistic view recognizes far more.

data point: aiui the Iraqi military had to purposefully use encircling helicopter-gunship fire to keep Kurdish villagers confined to gassing-range because otherwise it would've been too easy to render the gas ineffective by simply getting the hell out of the immediate area

not wildly successful in the long term, but things have their own momentum and at some point the imperative to suppress insurgency effectively takes a backseat to the nearer-term imperative to just straight-up kill people that oppose you because they opposed you

hm, probably, but probably only if the scope of the question is limited to deliberate and methodical depopulation and excludes depopulation-by-unintended-consequence, otherwise we'd likely just end up doing mainly epidemeology
