"get up to anything last night?" oh nothing much, just a little CHATTING WITH WERNER HERZOGpic.twitter.com/SNEa9PST09
Wife and I did date night for a showing of Herzog's new film MEETING GORBACHEV, and Herzog did a Q&A. It was my second time seeing him in person. Wife and I both got to shake his hand last time, but this time I got to briefly chat with him and it was lovely.
The movie was interesting. A lot of Herzog's movies revolve around the theme of a dreamer whose dream is beautiful but also delusional. To me, this theme applies to MEETING GORBACHEV, but the dreamer is Herzog.
Herzog has a deep love for Gorbachev, because he has a beautiful dream of him: for Herzog, who ardently wanted German reunification, Gorbachev's decision to not repress it made that reunification possible. So how can he *not* love him?
The irony, of course, is that Gorbachev's lighter hand and efforts at reform led to the utter demise of the Soviet system and the Soviet Union, which are what Gorbachev was trying to preserve -- which, as Lech Walesa points out in the film, was *Gorbachev's* delusional dream.
To me, thematically, the film is about the meeting of two dreamers: one whose dream is preserved, and one who was rudely awakened -- and the rude awakening of Gorbachev is part and parcel of Herzog being able to have his own dream of what Gorbachev represents.
Werner Herzog disagrees with me on this.
Herzog thinks that this effect comes across because he didn't edit a particular exchange quite right -- he says the great tragedy for Gorbachev was not the Soviet Union's collapse, as huge as that was, but that suddenly many Russians found themselves having non-Russian passports.
But seriously how great is it that I can type the words "Werner Herzog disagrees with me on this"
AND he didn't blast you to atoms with his brain
