It's also one of the main notes in cherry flavor -- cherries and almonds are closely related, and cherry pits release benzaldehyde (and cyanide) into the fruit. You can test this yourself by adding almond extract to fruit punch -- suddenly it's cherry.

I imagine this is why people often put almond flavoring in cherry pies: it's to increase the "cherry" flavor.
