A display in a natural history museum somehow really affected me strongly and has stuck with me. It was a human skeleton riding a horse skeleton with a dog skeleton running alongside.
The accompanying text explained the unique three-species synergistic cooperation that made hunting together dramatically more effective than humans, wolves, or humans+wolves could be, and the protection & provision for horses.
On the theory that civilization was driven primarily as a response to horse-warriors, that synergy is the basis of everything.
fascinating! I'd certainly been aware of the "co-evolution" framing of humans and dogs, but horses makes a lot of sense too.
Horses responded to human facial expression, co-evolutionary trait we also associate with dogs.
It's possible but unlikely that plains dwelling proto-horses experienced other primates to an extent that they can read fear, hostility, and care. But we certainly bred them for increased load capacity and endurance a long time ago.
“She’s a big city police horse, he’s an Amish draft horse, and together they’re teaming up for an adventure that has audiences off to the races”
Also working ranches, law enforcement.
