As a rule, survival takes precedence over status-jockeying which takes precedence over classification. Or, compactly, forward/backward > up/down > left/right. Which is to say that if people are afraid, they evaluate people's traits in terms of how threatening they are...

If they don't feel afraid but they feel angry, they'll evaluate people's traits in terms of whether they can dominate them. If neither holds, then and only then can they evaluate 'rationally', whatever that means.
