It was also vastly more creative and even occasionally rescued cats. SA was a Boschian hellscape of evil people robotically tearing at themselves and each other, learning nothing but torture.

Yup. Only superficially similar (in that they were both terrible). Find it odd that despite 4chan's overarching ethos being the collective (or the lulz, at least) over individual, it's the goons who all ended up commies.

Maybe it's like that stereotype of high-powered CEOs who are submissive in bed because they have to make decisions and take responsibility all day. People have a need to subsume themselves into a collective, and if they can't do it on the Internet, they have to do it IRL.

I don't see the anon ethos as being collectivist. With strict anonymity, one's contributions stand or fall alone, without reference to one's membership or existence in a social matrix.
