Been looking for a compilation of Trump-era hoaxes like this. Only thing it's missing is a comparison to hate crimes that happened as initially reported -- but that article would be much shorter. Yes, it's Daily Caller. You think Vox would do it?https://dailycaller.com/2019/02/18/hoax-hate-crimes-list/ …

It’s like the introduction of virulent diseases into a population with no natural immunity, or a series of fw:fw:re:fw: chain emails that made it all the way to the front page of...everything.
-
Yeah, what's interesting about these stories is what they say about the incentives and parameters the news system is subject to, what signals get amplified and which get damped
-
Yep. I’ve been described as cynical, but even I’m not cynical enough to think most media are deliberately boosting things they know to be lies. I think they’re both prisoners and components of a system evolved under bad incentives to be a perfect host for certain frauds.

Well, Matty Glesias does.
-
True. He’s also a good case of gazing into the abyss for me: I am so ready to believe the worst about him that, if I don’t watch myself, I could easily fall for a hoax story depicting him as the perpetrator. We do well to remember which systems we may be a part of as well.

http://fakehatecrimes.org exists, may be a better database than Daily Caller article.
