It's a hell of a redirection. x ∈ X claims harm from y ∈ Y. The Archons firmly declare that this proves all X are harmed by all Y. x lied. The Archons declare that some ys' reaction to this revelation...is simply further proof that all X are harmed by all Y.

This is, and I say this without hyperbole, a technique of mass hypnosis.

To be precise: Cupp isn't making a direct logical connection. She's asserting that some ys (thus all of Y) are being 'gross' (a modish term for sinful/evil/repulsive used by those of degraded vocabularies) and <mumble mumble> X is _even more at risk now_. Abracadabra.

The upshot is that the contradictory data (an x ∈ X was not, in fact, harmed by a y ∈ Y) is recuperated into a reason you need to believe _even harder than you did before_ that Y is evil and X is in danger.

the "beauty" of argument by anecdote-and-metonymy is that it can't be wrong, because it's not-even-wrong not sure what to do about it except just keep yelling that (x ∈ X was harmed by a y ∈ Y) says nothing ∀x.y even when true; and that feels inadequate against mass hypnosis

it feels like the kind of rhetorical trick that must work mainly on people who were drilled in "representative sampling is very important and authoritative" but not adequately taught that "plausible as metonymy" and "statistically representative" aren't the same thing
