Does anyone have a theory of the rom-com, by the way? Why are those stories popular? Romance novels seem to have a more realistic idea of what women want. Are the movie audiences experiencing false consciousness?

Romance novels are consumed individually, rom-coms have to appeal to couples, thus the latter have to respect social conventions in a way the former do not.
