It is fundamentally different. Gay slurs, like racist and sexist slurs, attack inherent, immutable characteristics. Incels, in contrast, are voluntarily adopting the traits of inceldom, and freely choosing to associate with other incels. It is a chosen, mutable label.

Ok, let’s analyze. What would you consider to be the “traits of inceldom?”

I've spent enough time browsing incel reddits to know that the majority do not consider it "voluntary." The MGTOW types do.

Adopting the whole Stacey/Chad narrative, calling women "females" or robots, refusing to treat women as peers and never, ever engaging with them platonically... these are all chosen, voluntary behaviours. Incels are not merely male virgins; they're a specific kind of misogynist.

Ok, I get that. I would describe those as coping behaviors to deal with an underlying problem, and that’s one discussion. Another is: why would any of those traits describe someone who defaced a billboard to make a political attack on Bill Maher? It’s his use I find interesting.

I think calling them coping mechanisms is a stretch, as they appear both to increase the misery these people experience, and stand directly in the way of improving their situation. A coping mechanism should surely reduce the distress caused by one's predicament.

As for using it as an insult here... it's meant to be generally disparaging, and so it does function as an insult. And lashing out as those perceived to be successful does seem to be a common feature of incels (amongst others) so it doesn't feel like the biggest stretch to me.

I’m reminded of the way alcohol is often a very counterproductive coping mechanism. For the second, I hear you, but I also think there’s a reason he chooses “incel” and not “loser” or “wasteman” or another term which conveys material or class scorn without the sexual element.

I do think that reason is partly because “incel” increasingly is understood as having a fundamental aspect, as going to the heart of a person. A loser can reform, a wasteman can stop wasting; but “incel” is premised on a character and nature element more than a behavioral one.

This is partly because “incel” describes not just the shitty behaviors people take on to make sense of their situation, but also the aspects of their nature- often neurologically atypical, or just plain unattractive- which make those narratives attractive in the first place.
