If money can buy influence in politics, how come there's so little money in politics?

Apparently a total of $2.4 billion was spent during the 2016 US presidential election. $2.4 billion is less than Coca Cola's annual marketing budget. If corporations and the super rich could spend a few more billion to control the US government, why wouldn't they?

Now the choice is Donald Trump or quite likely someone like Sanders, Warren, or AOC. Why are the super-rich, who hate both these options, not spending a little to avoid this? "Free riding" is a weak answer.

But the children and heirs of the super-rich are driving those candidates! They're the ones who can afford unpaid internships and foundation jobs.
