Interesting, thanks. I too wish that DC and Marvel would work out a joint ownership agreement, because both characters deserve to be called Captain Marvel. But it will probably never happen. Also, that article mixes up copyright and trademark in a couple of places, as usual.

My guess is at this point DC is uninterested in the trademark or in ever calling the character Captain Marvel ever again, and the reason is movies. Marvel is now a movie production subsidiary of Disney, not a comic-book publisher. And DC is trying to get there as well. +

Both Marvel and DC want to make movies from their properties, as many and as quickly as possible, and neither one want there to be the slightest hint of confusion over which one is which. So the Big Red Cheese will be named Shazam forever more, because that's more profitable.
