nah. the above is another way of saying the definition was *in* play and my side lost. it's not like I was ever really under any delusion what the other side of that was about.

The principled version is dead as MLK now, of course, and (maybe inevitably) we have a resurgence of ethnic eliminationism wearing its skin. It would be nice if everyone had decided to just be unhyphenated-American 50 years ago, but Soviet propaganda ruined that.
-
(btw fair point that the USSR was arguably 20th century's worst offender, tho that's more a case of racial resentment weaponized against a geopolitical enemy whereas I focused on the British version bc I'm thinking of the tactic mainly as an internal mechanism)
-
(tho ntymi the USSR definitely *also* used it internally)

It's not about Americans, it was a semi-organic reconception whose function was to recenter the European identity on the interests of the ascending Anglo/German/Prot bloc rather than the fading Catholic/Spanish/Italian-centric self-conception entailed by "christendom."

that's just it -- I'll conceed the facts and rhetorical climate have blown so far past the argument that "end whiteness" isn't worth trying to salvage but I'm still not gonna apologize for trying to oppose racial exceptionalism

sometimes you have the fight for control of the public meaning of a signifier and you lose, so you back off from it because you lost, and that's all there is to it. I got annoyed at the conflation of losing with "getting played" tho.

eh. lots of people have to listen to memes whose plain meaning is disgusting and which are directed at them as an identity-category, daily. the threshold of caring has to be a function of likelihood it can and will be meaningfully acted on, bc sticks and stones etc but words etc
-
but, okay, sure, maybe I'm just a terrible person. I'll make a note to grieve about it over a long winter evening or two. (aand I'm hereby officially out, too, I guess.)

hm. ok, 1. understood all around, and, yeah, they are. 2. trashing the other person bc you want out of an argument you don't have the energy for is sth I know I've been guilty of in the past, so, imo yeah you were doing that a bit here but, hey, karma, so, fair enough
-
3. I do genuinely apologize if I came across more aggro than I meant to, and ... well, yeah, genuinely don't mean to, it's a problem I have, know I have, and usually am trying to correct for. I still fail a lot anyway. that's all I got. thanks for being reasonable anyway tho.
